GWINNETT COUNTY RECOGNIZES GEORGIA TECH BASKETBALL AT ARENA AT GWINNETT CENTER THROUGH OFFICIAL PROCLOMATION BIG TIME BASKETBALL IS STILL ALIVE IN METRO ATLANTA
(November 14, 2011) - Duluth, GA - With professional basketball in downtown Atlanta on hiatus, basketball fans can get their fill beginning in November, as Georgia Tech men's and women's teams will play numerous home games at Gwinnett's own Arena at Gwinnett Center beginning in November 2011.
County officials are pleased that Georgia Tech has chosen the Arena at Gwinnett Center as their venue, and will officially recognize November 2011-February 2011 as "Support Georgia Tech Basketball Months" at the Tuesday, November 15 County Commission meeting (7PM), at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Building in Lawrenceville.
Accepting the proclamation from County Commission Chairwoman Charlotte Nash will be Tech Associate Athletic Director Teresa Wenzel and women's Head Coach MaChelle Joseph. Other Tech officials expected to be on hand include Gene Hill, Director of Operations and Stephanie Herbst-Lucke, Sports marketing.
With the Georgia Tech Official Proclamation, the County Commission not only gives their support for Georgia Tech's season in their temporary "home away from home", but also encourages all Gwinnetians to support the series, the Arena, and at Gwinnett Center, and shows Gwinnett's devotion and dedication to amateur sporting competitions and events.
Nominated for the proclamation by the Gwinnett Convention and Visitors Bureau (GCVB) and Gwinnett Center, local tourism and Arena officials are excited about Tech's upcoming games. "Gwinnett is a county that is incredibly supportive of sports teams, and we want to welcome Tech to Gwinnett, and let our visitors and residents know that there's yet another great sports option this winter," explains Lisa Anders, GCVB Deputy Director. With 16 games featuring out-of-town teams, drawing fans, families and residents, the series will also serve to generate revenue and create economic impact for Gwinnett's hotels, restaurants and the Arena.
Tech men's and women's teams will play 16 games at the Arena from November-February 2012. Robyn Ali, Gwinnett Center Director of Marketing explains, "With the current NBA lockout, this will be a affordable way for families and sports fans to enjoy big-time basketball. Women's tickets are just $5 per game, with men's tickets starting at $10 per game. " Ali adds that on November 22 (Kennesaw State, women's) and 23 (Siena, Men's) Georgia Tech games will offer 50% off admission for fans who bring in a canned item.
Georgia Tech's opponents will come from all over the U.S, with the men squaring off with Florida A & M; Delaware State; Siena; Alabama A & M and Mercer. The women will face a challenging batch of opponents including Kennesaw State; Nebraska; Virginia; Duke; Miami; Wake Forest; NC State; Maryland; Boston College; North Carolina AT & T and Old Dominion.
